Perle Hops are a German variety with a delicate spicy, floral, and slightly minty character. Developed at the Hüll Hop Research Center in the 1970s, Perle was bred as a disease-resistant replacement for Hallertau Mittelfrüh and has since become popular among both European and American brewers. Its pleasant bitterness and refined aroma make it especially useful in lagers and classic ales.

Perle works well in clean, crisp beers such as Pilsners, Kölsch, Lagers, and Cream Ales, but its versatility also allows it to play a role in maltier styles like Bocks or Belgian Strong Ales.

Perle Hops FAQ

How do you pronounce Perle hops?

English speakers pronounce Perle as “Pearl.” (go figure). It’s the German word for pearl, and the Germans pronounce it as "“PEHR-luh".

What do Perle hops taste like?

Perle delivers a smooth, mild bitterness with spicy, floral, and minty notes, great for delicate lager and ale styles.

Can I use Perle hops in ales?

Only if you want to brew a good beer! While it's popular in lagers, Perle also complements styles like Cream Ale or Belgian Strong Ale.

What hops are similar to Perle?

Try Hallertau Mittelfrüh for a slightly softer character or Northern Brewer for a bolder backbone. Liberty also makes a good Perle alternative for aroma-driven recipes.

Is Perle good for dry hopping?

Though more commonly used in the boil or whirlpool, Perle’s subtle aroma can add herbal finesse when dry hopped in delicate lagers or hybrid styles.

Pro Tip: Brewing a crisp German-style Pilsner? Pair Perle with Hallertau Mittelfrüh in the late boil to add a rounded, spicy touch while keeping it true to tradition.
